We have had a fantastic day at Weston Park Museum today consolidating and extending our learning about Ancient Egypt.
We have been thinking about how life in the Bronze Age in the UK compares to life in Ancient Egypt at the same time. We have seen a real Egyptian Mummy and artifacts that are thousands of years old! We carried out a science investigation to replicate the mummification process on tomatoes and even made our own artifacts! Every single member of the class set the perfect example and made the school proud! Well done Year 3! In our art lesson today, we started our new collage unit. We practiced tearing paper, overlapping and layering to make a collage fish. In the next few weeks we will be using newspaper to make a collage of the Iron Man!
This afternoon the year 3 and 4 children had a fantastic time building dens. They worked well in mixed teams to create a den with canes, tubes, zip ties, tarpaulin and pegs. We have some excellent dens that withstood the test of wind and rain and some that didn't! Great fun was had by all!
This half term we have started reading the Iron Man by Ted Hughes. The Iron man is about a gigantic metal robot who appears out of nowhere, crashing onto the beach and shattering into many parts. He is discovered by a young boy called Hogarth, who becomes his friend. We won’t give any more of the story away; we think the children will enjoy this novel just as much as our last book Billy the Kid.
Our topic for the Summer term is “Ancient Egypt” We will be travelling back in time thousands of year to the banks of the River Nile, where we will learn all about the amazing people and places of Ancient Egypt.
Our lessons will involve us:
To start our new art unit on Egyptian landscapes, today we learnt about what the primary colours are and what makes them primary colours. We then leant about secondary and tertiary colours and had a go at mixing them ourselves.
We have a lot of children in year 3 who have achieved out attendance target this half term. Well done everyone. Keep it up!
Today, we visited The Royal Spice as part of our Food, Glorious Food Topic where we learnt about the ingredients used in Asian cookery.
Our day started with an interactive session where we looked and touched different ingredients and spices. We learnt that almost all spices were sourced from plants. We examined what they were (roots, leaves, seeds etc) and how they are processed for us to be able to eat. We were then showed how to make onion pakora using the different spices and a pestle and mortar. We then had the chance to do this for ourselves. Afterwards, we took it in turns to go into the kitchen where we cooked the pakora we had made, the chefs also demonstrated how to cook two different curries and naan bread. The chefs chose three volunteers to replicate the making of the naan and we cooked the dough in the tandoor. We learnt how the spices were used to make these dishes. We also took part in a small quiz where we had some spices on plates. We had to identify what they are using pictures from a reference book. The best part of almost everyone’s day was tasting the curries, naan bread and pilau rice that we had cooked. There were lots of empty plates and children having second helpings of food! The chef even had to cook us some more food! |
