Welcome To FS1
We Are Busy Bee's!
At Kexborough Primary School, we strive to build upon the foundational learning experiences that children have gained at home and in previous settings. Our goal in FS1 is to create a nurturing and stimulating environment where children are encouraged to explore, discover, and grow.
We offer rich, engaging activities and play-based learning opportunities, all designed to spark curiosity and foster development. Guided by the Development Matters framework, we take a flexible approach that allows us to follow the children's interests, ensuring that each learning experience is meaningful and relevant to their world. We are also careful to adapt our approach and tailor our questioning to meet each child at their individual stage of development.
In FS1, we are committed to fostering confident, happy learners who are eager to come to school each day. By creating a safe, welcoming space where exploration and imagination thrive, we help children develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
We look forward to sharing this exciting journey with you!

5.12.24- Our learning this week
This week we have been such busy bees! In Nursery we have started getting into the festive spirit and have enjoyed learning our Christmas songs ready for the stay and play in a few weeks. Also, the children have been taking it in turns to enjoy an advent. We baked a yummy Christmas cake ready for our grown ups on Wednesday and every child made a Christmas wish!
We welcomed some new starters to our Nursery on Monday and Tuesday this week and it was so lovely to see how amazing the older children were and how they welcomed them into our classroom. Me and Mrs Cookson were very proud.
We have introduced a post office into our Nursery this week and the children have enjoyed learning how to use stamps and post the letters in the post box.
Ideas for home learning: It would be absolutely brilliant if the children could talk you through how to send a letter and if they could post something through the letterbox.

29.11.24- Our learning this week
This week we have had lots of fun in Nursery! We have continued reading Stick Man and some of the children used sticks to create Stick Man outside with sticks and playdough. Also inside, some children made a snowy Stick Man picture using a range of different resources.
In Maths, we have been working hard to recognise our shapes and use our language to describe their properties like 'this circle is round' and 'a triangle has 3 sides.' In our Maths area the children used hoops to sort the shapes into groups.
Also we read a link story '5 Minutes Peace' and talked about the mummy wanting 5 minutes peace and the children following her around the house. The children used this story to give them new ideas for play in the home corner and our dolls house.
In baking this week, the children spotted the ingredients and followed clear instructions to make oat cookies.
Most importantly this week, I have really noticed strong friendships forming in the classroom and I am seeing everyday fantastic manners, sharing and kindness. It really makes me such a proud teacher. Well done busy bees!
Ideas for home learning: Discuss shapes circles, triangles and squares at home. Some children are getting triangles and squares mixed up at the moment. Any practice identifying shapes will really help.

21.11.24- Our learning this week
This week the snow came! It was so exciting! We enjoyed getting wrapped up and going outside. The next day when it had frozen over we discovered that our feet made a crunching sound! G found a leaf frozen in the ice and he shared it with his friends. The children talked about it and shared some brilliant language- 'it must have been freezing', 'the water has frozen', when will it melt?'. We talked about the sun melting the ice and that the leaf would be soggy but unfrozen.
In our classroom we have started our focus text, Stick Man. This is an excellent book and it also gave us opportunities to discuss the changing weather throughout the story. It also gave us opportunities to talk about our families and share our family photos. It was fantastic to see the children share so confidently their families and explain their own family histories with us. We have displayed these photos in the home corner and in a photo album and the children have enjoyed spotting their own families and talking to each other about them. We used our word from this half term, unique, to describe each family and said just like people, families are all unique! We have linked family to homes and the children each drew who lives in their house and used their knowledge of tall and short as well as eye and hair colour to help them.
As we have been busy learning about likes and dislikes and understanding that everyone is different, the children enjoyed making their own pizzas and adding their favourite toppings. They all enjoyed eating these outside. It really warmed them up!
Finally, in Maths we have linked Stick Man to shape and colour and taken stick man on his journey home by helping him identify colours and shapes along the way.
What a fantastic week for our busy bees!
Home learning ideas: focus on where things live in the house. We have introduced the dolls house and will be focussing on activities in the home. Talk with your child about which room they go to sleep in, eat in, sit on the sofa in etc. This will really help them understand that just like in our classroom, things and activities have a place at home too.

15.11.24- Our learning this week
We have had a super fun week using our new toys in Nursery. We now have a fridge to put foods away that need to be kept cold. Also in the construction area, we have added a work bench where the children can screw and drill away to build new things. This is something the children have shown lots of interest in outside so it was wonderful to add learning opportunities to extend this.
We have continued to learn all about us and how we are unique. We used mirrors to look at our reflections and then drew on big shared paper a portrait of ourselves. It will be good to see how the children's drawing and self portraits change over the next couple of weeks. Looking at ourselves and thinking about our appearance made us realise we are sometimes similar and sometimes different! Later in the week we talked about interests, likes and dislikes. This helped us to understand we are all unique and like and dislike different things.
In Maths, we focussed on subitizing to 3 and recognising amounts up to 3 without counting. This is a tricky skill but I was so impressed with how fast the children were!
In baking, we made chocolate muffins which all the children enjoyed and said were 'yummy!'.
We ended the week celebrating 'Children in Need'. It was wonderful to raise lots of money as a class and we talked about the money going to children who needed help. We agreed it was kind to help them. We made some fantastic Pudsey pictures and took home a ;yummy spotty bun made by Mrs Cookson.
Home learning ideas: Use a group of objects up to 3. Hide under a small piece of fabric like a tea towel. Uncover the objects and ask your child 'how many?'. Repeat this. Encourage children to recognise the amount without individually counting them.

7.11.24- Our learning this week
Welcome back, busy bees! It was wonderful to hear all the fun stories the children shared about their half term. We kicked off our week by gathering in a circle, taking turns to tell each other about our favourite parts of the break. It was great to see how much progress the children have made with their turn-taking and communication skills!
This week, we also added a few new feelings to our feelings wall—nervous, excited, and sleepy. We talked about how it's normal for everyone to feel different when coming to school, and that’s perfectly okay. To help us feel calm and happy, we practised our finger breathing technique, which has been a great tool for relaxation.
As a class, we’ve been focusing on how to make ourselves and our friends happy. The children were particularly excited to explore our new hairdresser's area, where they got to play the role of hairstylists, giving their customers nice haircuts and serving them tea. It was so lovely to see them making each other smile!
In addition to our play, we began reading a new story this week: There's Only One You by Kathryn Heling. The book sparked many conversations about how, while we are all similar, we are also unique. We talked about the different parts of our faces, like our eyes and hair, and discussed our likes and dislikes. We explored how it’s okay to think differently from our friends. This learning extended into our activities, where the children used mirrors to create pictures of their faces, paying attention to details like eye colour.
Home Learning Ideas: Encourage your child to use the word "unique" in conversations, and help them describe their feelings using words like excited, happy, sad, and angry. You can also talk about how we all have different likes and dislikes, and that's what makes each of us special.

24.10.24- Autumn play and stay event
What a delightful morning we shared with the Busy Bees and their grown-ups! It was heartwarming to watch the children proudly showcase their nursery and demonstrate their confidence in all the different areas. A big well done to everyone—including the grown-ups—for the fantastic crafts. We hope you loved the beautiful singing and had fun with the scavenger hunt as much as we did.
Wishing everyone a happy and restful half-term!

17.10.24- Our learning this week
Wow what a busy week! We have been busy bees learning about our new story 'The Billy Goat's Gruff'. We started the week by listening carefully to the story and we found that there were lots of similarities between it and the other books we have read so far. We noticed there were 3 goats just like the 3 pigs and 3 bears. Also the goats were different sizes, just like the bears! We then got busy in our nursery and the children have been making trolls in the playdough and building bridges inside and out all week. Outside they have been busy telling the story and trip trapping over their own bridges. Later in the week, they made their own bridges out of paper and card and used their cutting skills to make a long river running under their bridge.
In Maths we have continued to focus on the shapes circles, triangles and squares. We have been shape detectives and found shapes in our bag. The children felt the shapes for straight and round sides and I was so impressed with the children already noticing the corners and straight and round sides.
In baking this week the children made and enjoyed baking yummy chocolate chip cookies. They followed the recipe and steps carefully with Mrs Cookson.
Ideas for learning at home- can you draw or make me a troll's face? Remember how we drew an angry face using eyebrows and sharp teeth! I will give a special sticker to you if you can!

10.10.24- Our learning this week
This week we finally brought our amazing pumpkins inside! We have grown 8 amazing pumpkins, all different shapes and sizes. We all counted them and said they were all UNIQUE! This is a word we have been using in class to describe all of us and we have linked this word to the three bears who all like their porridge in different ways. We decided that everyone is different and we can all like and dislike different things. We will be building on this learning later this term.
In class we have continued to read Goldilocks and use language big, medium and small within provision. We decorated the three bowls, chairs and beds in different colours and patterns as we agreed the bears all liked different things.
In baking, we used our home grown pumpkins to bake a pumpkin cake. It was delicious!
In Maths, we have continued to learn about shapes and have focussed on triangles. We have been practicing naming triangles, squares and circles quickly on the board and the children have started to practice drawing their own shapes within provision.

This week we have been busy in Nursery learning more about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Our focus in our learning has been big, medium and small. Also we have been talking about feelings and how the characters felt at different parts in the story.
In Maths we have been learning about circles and have spotted them around our classroom and outside. The children have been practicing drawing their own circles within provision.
Finally we all enjoyed a yummy, warm bowl of porridge during the cold Wednesday morning. The chidren enjoyed it with fruit or honey and we talked about everyone liking different things just like the three bears.

26.9.24- Our learning this week
This week we have been learning about a new story, 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. The children have really enjoyed this story and have enjoyed acting out the story within our new home corner. Also in the small world area they have enjoyed using small figures to tell the story.
Lots of busy bees have created some beautiful paintings and drawings of Goldilocks and the bears too!
In our cooking session this week we talked about breakfast and linked this to 'the three little pigs' and how a good breakfast makes our bodies strong and ready for the day. We talked about healthy and unhealthy foods and how healthy filling foods give us energy. Then the children enjoyed bagels and scrambled eggs aswell as fruit.
Enjoy some photos of the children having lots of fun!

19.9.24- Our learning this week
We have had a lovely week in Nursery with lots of lovely sunshine. We have finished our book focus 'The Three Little Pigs' and have continued to build houses across indoor and outdoor provision. Also this week I set the children a challenge to make their own house for the little pigs using different materials and then we huffed and puffed and tried to blow it down. I was so impressed with the resilience that the children showed and how even if their house blew down they could try to make it 'stronger'.
In baking this week, the children chose their own delicious fruit and made a yummy fruit tart. We explored how fruit is healthy and it makes our bodies 'strong' just like how bricks make houses strong. We agreed that if we gave our bodies healthy fruit and vegetables we would make our bodies stronger!
We ended the day today by harvesting the corn outside and the children were amazed at what they found hiding under the leaves!
Have a look at our fantastic photos!

12.9.24- Our learning this week
This week we have continued our book, 'The Three Little Pigs'. This has given us lots of learning opportunities in Nursery. The children have been mixing colours to mix pink for a pig and have been drawing the three little pig. We have started building some houses in Nursery and using words 'strong' and 'weak' to describe them.
In our Maths sessions, we have been focussing on orally counting to 3, showing finger numbers and counting objects up to 3.
We are already so impressed with how well everyone has settled into Nursery and it is lovely to see so much creative play inside and outside. Well done busy bees!

We have had a lovely first week in Nursery with our new additions. It has been a week full of learning the rules and routines in school and getting to know each other. The children have had lots of fun playing in the new areas and outside in our playground. Here are some pictures of the children having a brilliant time! Remember to watch the slideshow to view them all.

12.7.24- Our learning this week
We have had a fantastic last week in Nursery for many of our older children who are transitioning into bear cubs next week. We started the week with some very exciting harvesting! the children dug for potatoes in our garden and we harvested 3 bowls full! We also cut off some of our lettuce. On Wednesday we used these potatoes to make herby, garlicy potatoes and enjoyed with egg and lettuce sandwiches! As we have been learning about fruits that grow in the Summer time the children followed their picnic with yummy strawberry meringue. It has been lovely to end the week with the children supporting England and wearing red, white and blue colours. We all had lots of fun dancing to some football songs and decorating some flags ready for the big game on Sunday! 3.7.24- Healthy breakfasts
Today in our cooking session the children enjoyed a yummy healthy breakfast. We spoke on the carpet about how important a healthy breakfast was to help give us energy to learn and play. We also talked about healthy choices for breakfast and how important this is for teeth and our bodies! The children enjoyed a breakfast feast of healthy cereal, fruit, fruit juices, yogurt, crusty bread, ham and cheese. We are so impressed with how much they ate and how they tried new things. Well done Busy Bees :) 28.6.24- Our learning this week
This week we have really enjoyed the sunshine outside. The children have been enjoying the fire station area and have continued to look after the garden and notice the changes and how the plants have grown 'bigger' and 'taller'. Also we have introduced a tent and picnic area for the children to enjoy. To link to Summer and the hotter weather we made ice cream sodas on Wednesday. This was a fist experience for many including me! We talked about the changes we could see to the liquid when we added the ice cream and used words like 'fizzy' and 'creamy' to describe the drink. The children stirred the mixture to make sure the ice cream had melted in properly. 20.6.24- Our learning this week
This week we began our new book, 'There's a dragon in your book!'. The children really enjoyed this book and it gave us chance to talk about fire. We discussed how we phone for the fire service and to dial 999. We decided we could put fire out using water just like in the story. To help bring their learning to life we introduced a new fire station outside and also within our indoor provision. Also the children enjoyed playing in our seaside small world area and using the nets to search for sealife in the rockpools. There has been lots of fantastic learning going on this week, well done everyone! 6.6.24- Our learning this week
Welcome back busy bees! We can't believe we only have half a term left with some of you! The year has really flown. This week we have started our new story, 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. The children have really enjoyed this story and using the puppets in the book corner to retell it. In baking this week the children enjoyed the old classic beans on toast and we read the story 'beans on toast' to learn about how beans made the journey from a bean pod all the way to the tin. The children have found this story really engaging and it has been brilliant to see them building their own beanstalks outside and climbing them. This week's books have linked really well to the plants we have been growing and looking after outside. In Maths, we have continued to look at subitising to 5 and quickly recognising amounts of numbers. Mrs Cookson's group of younger children are getting so good when recognising 2D shapes too! 23.5.24- Happy Birthday Rufus!
Today we had a wonderful morning celebrating Rufus' birthday. Rufus is our class mascot and the busy bees love looking after Rufus in our class. This week we have been busy making cards, decorating the classroom and baking a birthday cake for the party. Together we made a shopping list with all the things we needed to buy for the party and decided what games we needed to play. It was so fantastic to see all the children having such a great time! They all enjoyed musical statues, musical bumps and pass the parcel and they all made their own sandwiches for their party plate. After the children had enjoyed all their yummy food, we all sang happy birthday to Rufus. This has all brought the learning we have done over the last 2 weeks to life and it was so nice to hear comments like 'this is the best party ever' and 'I'm having so much fun'. What a lovely end to our half term. Have a lovely week off and we will see you in June! 16.5.24- Our learning this week
We began our new book, 'The Best Jumper' this week which is all about a little mouse who received his favourite every present on his birthday. We introduced our new birthday party area and the children have really enjoyed making cakes and singing happy birthday to their friends. We have also made each children a birthday band with their birthday on so they can learn what month and season they are born in. In our reading corner we have introduced story stones and puppets to encourage the children to tell well known stories and even make up their own. It has been lovely to see some of the children already start to do this with their friends. Our Maths focus this week has been shape and the children have enjoyed threading and moulding materials to make different shapes. In baking this week the children made party rings to link to our birthday focus. 10.5.24- Our learning this week
We started the week by thinking 'all about me!' and we made our faces using lots of different materials. We talked all about being happy and sad and making happy and sad expressions. Have a look at some of our brilliant examples! In Maths the children continued to make lots of patterns and we spotted mistakes in our patterns too.
