PHSE CURRICULUM
PHSE is a non-statutory subject, which is taught alongside the statutory Relationships and Health Education. PHSE can encompass many areas of study often covering sensitive matters. PHSE is delivered weekly by the class teacher as they best understand the needs of their pupils and will adapt the delivery of their lessons to best cater the needs of their pupils.
WE ONLY GET "ONE LIFE" SO LET'S LEARN TO LIVE IT WELL
We are excited to announce that we are currently transitioning from teaching PSHE through 'You, Me, PSHE' and have begun using 'One Life'. One Life is not just a set of lessons but a whole-school ethos that promotes the mental, physical, and social fitness of our children.
- Through 'One Life' we will focus on helping children build a strong sense of self-identity and self-awareness, which forms the foundation for their well-being.
- We will teach them the importance of healthy relationships within families and friendships, emphasizing kindness, forgiveness, and bouncing back from challenges.
- We also introduce essential topics like healthy eating, body image, boundaries, consent, and privacy to ensure they grow up respecting themselves and others.
- Alongside this, we cover self-care, self-compassion, and compassion for others, helping them navigate stereotypes and form respectful relationships both offline and online.
- Through lessons on personal safety, physical fitness, and emergency response, we empower children to make healthy choices and balance their activity with reflection, so they develop a holistic approach to their mental and physical health.
At the heart of One Life is building a strong mental, physical and social fitness. Each statutory requirement has been broken down into age-appropriate content which has been sequenced and connected to ensure that children know more and do better.
One Life : Morning Routine
To ensure our children arrive at school and they are happy and settled to learn, every class completes a morning routine creating a sense of belonging and calm.
MEET AND GREET
Children enter the classroom with a warm welcome from their teacher. The children have the option to take part in safe, positive touch which could be handshake, fist bump, high-five or a hug.
JOURNALING / THOUGHT SPLAT
All children have their own journals and are encouraged to write down how they are feeling. They use a "feelings wheel" to help them to identify exactly what they are feeling. Children are taught to identify helpful and unhelpful feelings.
You can see more about journaling on the "Wellbeing Newsletter" section of our website
MINDFUL MINUTE
Children take part in a mindful minute focusing upon breath work.
POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
Each day children are expected to recite a range of positive affirmations to help them to understand "What
follows I am…follows us"
WISE WORDS
Wise words are shared with the classes to help them to understand their own feelings and help them to understand how they can show up as their best selves

RSE : Relationships and Sex Education
All children should have the right to access information that keeps them safe from harm. This includes learning about healthy and safe relationships (family, friends, society etc.), and keeping safe online and offline; raising concerns with adults where this is appropriate. RSE is designed to safeguard all our children, supporting them to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours that will assist in protecting them throughout their lives. The skills and knowledge that is taught to pupils is always developmentally appropriate to the age of the child being taught.
It should be clear that RSE does not simply mean 'Sex Education' as can often be misunderstood, rather developing an understanding of what healthy relationships are and using this understanding to stay safe. Learning in RSE will also include recognising, understanding and speaking about all forms of discrimination, violence, abuse and neglect and to seek support and advice on a range of issues from trusted sources.

You will also see below the results of our latest parent/carer consultation which was completed in May 2024.

When delivering RSE lessons we will follow these principles
- Agreed class rules for all discussions
- Content is depersonalised – generic examples and no personal stories
- Agreed resources, vocabulary and schemes are used
- Questions are answered in line with year group content. If questions are asked beyond this, then the teacher can pass on this question to parents
- Pupils are given opportunities to ask questions anonymously
- Pupils are taught in mixed gender groups, other than specific lessons on the practicalities of puberty
- Everyone speaks with and is treated with respect
