RE CURRICULUM

Curriculum Intent
At Kexborough Primary school, we believe that it is vital for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. Through Religious Education, children develop their knowledge of the world faiths, and their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. Our Religious Education curriculum is enhanced further with whole school visits to places of worship in our local area.

RE: STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS AND CURRICULUM INFORMATION
The national curriculum states the legal requirement that:
‘Every state-funded school must offer a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based, and which:
  • promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils; and
  • prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
All state schools … must teach religious education … All schools must publish their curriculum by subject and academic year online’.
Although there is not a National Curriculum for RE, all maintained schools must follow the National Curriculum requirements to teach a broad and balanced curriculum, which includes RE. All maintained schools therefore have a statutory duty to teach RE. Academies and free schools are contractually required through the terms of their funding agreement to make provision for the teaching of RE.
The Barnsley Locally Agreed Syllabus can be found here
Barnsley Gov Syllabus

In conjunction with the Agreed Barnsley Syllabus, Kexborough’s RE curriculum supports children in developing an understanding of the world around them. We promote tolerance, respect, faith and belief in others. We do this through answering six questions related to the 6 main religions: Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism. In their final year of Kexborough, we go beyond the questions and reflect on religion today, current events and how we can use our knowledge to make positive contributions to a multi-faith society.

The 6 questions are as follows:

  • Question 1 : Why are these words special?
  • Question 2 : Why are some places special?
  • Question 3 : How can faith contribute to Community Cohesion?
  • Question 4 : Why are some times special?
  • Question 5 : What can be learned from the lives of significant people of faith?
  • Question 6 : How do I and others feel about life and the universe around us?

These questions are the product of much thought by the Agreed Syllabus Conference and the Local Agreed Syllabus  Working Groups. They are designed to guide and shape pupils’ learning in RE across the years of schooling.
Of course, pupils begin to handle the key questions very simply, moving on to learn about and respond to religious objects and ideas, to describe for themselves, to analyse information, and increasingly to develop the ability to draw thoughtful and balanced conclusions.

Question 1 : Why are these words special?
Sacred books

Question 2 : Why are some places special?
Local places of worship, objects, artefacts, signs and symbols, sacred sites and pilgrimages

Question 3 :How can faith contribute to Community
Cohesion?
Beliefs, ethics, family traditions and faith in the community

Question 4: Why are some times special?
Festivals and families

Question 5 : What can be learned from the lives of significant people of faith?
Role models

Question 6 : How do I and others feel about life and the universe around us?
Ultimate questions

At Kexborough Primary School, we have further added before the questions for Foundation Stage ensuring a good grounding for understanding of religion to be built. In Year 6, they look beyond the questions - thinking about religion in society and completing their journey through the religions of the U.K ensuring they leave as tolerant, respectful and useful members of the community.

The coverage overview has been planned as set out in the following documents.
LTP ADAPT
RE GRANULAR PLAN

Your Right to Withdraw from Religious Education (RE)
By law, parents can ask for their child to be taken out of all or part of RE at community, foundation or voluntary schools. Young people aged 18 and over can make this decision for themselves. You do not need to give a reason. (School Standards and Framework Act 1998, Section 71(3))
Before deciding, it may help to look at what RE covers and talk it through with the school. You should also make clear whether you want your child withdrawn from all RE or just certain parts.
Things to be aware of
  • If your child is withdrawn, the school will supervise them but doesn’t have to provide extra teaching. They may work somewhere else in school, such as the library.
  • Withdrawal only applies to RE lessons. Religion and belief may still come up in other subjects (like history, PSHE, or citizenship) and in wider school life. Children may also ask or discuss religious questions during lessons.
  • The school must agree to your request until you choose to change it. Children usually stay on school premises during this time.
Good to know
Although not required by law, headteachers often invite parents to meet and discuss a written withdrawal request before it is put in place.
