Today, we visited The Royal Spice as part of our Food, Glorious Food Topic where we learnt about the ingredients used in Asian cookery.
Our day started with an interactive session where we looked and touched different ingredients and spices. We learnt that almost all spices were sourced from plants. We examined what they were (roots, leaves, seeds etc) and how they are processed for us to be able to eat. We were then showed how to make onion pakora using the different spices and a pestle and mortar. We then had the chance to do this for ourselves. Afterwards, we took it in turns to go into the kitchen where we cooked the pakora we had made, the chefs also demonstrated how to cook two different curries and naan bread. The chefs chose three volunteers to replicate the making of the naan and we cooked the dough in the tandoor. We learnt how the spices were used to make these dishes. We also took part in a small quiz where we had some spices on plates. We had to identify what they are using pictures from a reference book. The best part of almost everyone’s day was tasting the curries, naan bread and pilau rice that we had cooked. There were lots of empty plates and children having second helpings of food! The chef even had to cook us some more food!

Today we have celebrated World Book Day. In Year 3, we have spent the day looking at Zog and the Flying Doctors. We have been re-writing the story, inventing new characters and drawing our favourite scenes, all while dressed as some of our favourite book characters!
Today, we made pancakes for Pancake Day. We found out where the ingredients came from and why we celebrate Pancake Day. The best part was eating them!
We were visited today by Compass Be Mental Health Support Team (MHST). MHST work with children and families in education settings in Barnsley and provide free, confidential support, help and advice for pupils and schools for issues related to mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Today, the workshop focused on emotions and how we feel inside. Firstly, we identified the different emotions that we know and how we show and represent these different emotions. We then looked at different scenarios and decided how someone may feel in different situations. The children then completed an activity sheet to show when they have felt surprised, happy, angry, excited, sad and worried. To finish the workshop the children listened to a story called ‘The Sun Can’t Shine Everyday.’ We have had a fun day today completing 4 different tasks around shapes. We have made 3D shapes with spaghetti and marshmallows, had a newspaper pyramid competition, played a trading game around shapes and even cracked the code to unlock a treat!
Today, we took part in a special workshop by Barnsley Schools Catering where we learnt about the importance of healthy eating. To begin, we tried a range of different fruits and decided together on a combination of complimentary flavours to make a smoothie. We then came up with a name for our smoothies, drew a bottle design and tasted them. We then presented our smoothie and allowed the rest of the other groups to try them. As a class we voted on our favourite smoothies and the winner took him a prize!
In our science lesson this week, we have been learning some of the real names for the bones in our skeletons. We had great fun labelling the bones on some brave volunteers!
In our outdoor PE sessions this half term, we are learning the skills of hockey. The children all did a fantastic job last week at practising the correct way to hold a hockey stick and have done even better today when dribbling a ball in and out of cones in different directions. We will continue to develop our hockey skills over the next three weeks where we will complete push passes whilst aiming at a target, trap a ball which is rolled and using a partner to be able to pass and trap a ball correctly between each other.
This half term we have been learning:
The children have asked some very insightful questions and we have done lots of acting out to distinguish between what is ‘mean’, ‘rude’ or ‘bullying’. Take a look at some of the scenarios we have spoken about in class and have a discussion at home to decide whether you think it is mean, rude or bullying. Remember to explain your reasons why! |
