Due to the disturbance in our classroom (the naughty elves) we have been writing persuasive letters to Santa in order to try and convince him to send Zippity and Hoppity back to the North Pole. We have learnt about features of persuasive and formal letter writing and have implemented these in to our own letters. Lets hope Santa listens and helps us to find our nice elves which have apparently got lost in transition!

This half term, our focus in art has been printing. We have learnt about a famous artist called William Morris and the ways in which he used print to create many different pieces of art and patterns. Over the last few weeks, we have experimented with different printing techniques such as monoprint, relief print and stamp print. We wanted to use one of these techniques to create a piece of festive Christmas wrapping paper and we decided stamp print would be the most appropriate to use for this task. The children spent time designing their Christmas stamps, creating them using string, glue and cardboard and then finally used a range of coloured paint to create their wrapping paper. Have a look at the photographs below to see us busy creating our masterpieces! Since December 1st, our Year 5 pupils have been dealing with some very naughty elves! The terrible twosome have caused many problems for us meaning we have had to lose our well-deserved break times cleaning up after them. The duo - Zippity and Hoppity- have shredded paper, had snowball fights, hung our PE kits from the ceiling, filled our draws and shoes with cereals, hung toilet paper across our classroom, ziplined across the room, drawn moustaches on our faces and written threatening messages on the board. Unfortunately, our nice elves got mixed up with this pair of troublemakers and now the Year 5 class have been suffering due to the actions of these elves. We are currently in the process of writing letters to the main man himself (Santa Claus) to beg him to send the nice elves instead! Keep a look out for our persuasive letters over the next few days and lets hope we can have this naughty pair sent back to the North Pole sharpish! A most terrible and scandalous crime has been committed on Fairy-Tale Avenue this week! The Three Little Pigs have been arrested and accused of killing the Big Bad Wolf in a brutal attack. Many argue that the pigs were simply acting in self-defence as the wolf had been after them for years. Nevertheless, the pigs have been taken in to custody and await trial following this horrifying crime. Our journalists (pictured below) have the latest news and have been collecting witness statements and evidence from those in and around the neighbourhood. In Art and Design, we have learnt a range of new skills in both paint and collage. Over the last 7 weeks, we have developed skills in mixing colours, tearing and layering collage and planning and designing shields, before finally constructing our Viking longboat seascapes. The pupils had to work independently and organise their own ideas and resources in order to create their final piece. On Tuesday, Year 5 went on a school trip to experience life as a Viking Settler. As always, this practical and immersive experience allowed children to fully grasp how it would have been to live in the era of the Vikings. They spent the day living as settlers and had to learn how to defend their land as warriors, collect and grow crops as farmers, how to make their own bread, entertain themselves with Viking board games and even had a go at making their own oil lamps in the pottery shed. We had a fantastic day and the children in Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed living as Viking settlers for the day. In French the children have been learning vocabulary related to breakfast foods and drinks. In order to put all of that learning into practice, we had breakfast today. The children had to come and greet Miss Mackay, respond to a question, order their food and drink and also use please and thank you at the appropriate times. The children were excellent at completing this practical assessment of their knowledge of French vocabulary and were rewarded with the food and drink that they ordered (there may have been enough for seconds too).
This morning, the children in Year 5 took part in a KS2 cross country event against two other schools. Every single child pushed themselves to their absolute limit, and I am so proud of each and every one of them. We even bagged ourselves a couple of 1st and 2nd places! Well done to all children who took part, despite the cold and wet weather! Due to the extremely sad news regarding our queen last week, we have been busy in Year 5 learning all about her majesty and the exceptional service she has demonstrated to our country over the last 70 years. We have been busy in class creating some beautiful artwork to display around our school. Here are some of the amazing portraits created in Year 5! Our focus in PE this half term is football. This week, Year 5 have been focusing on dribbling and controlling the ball, as well as learning to pass accurately over longer distances. The children participated in many different mini games and activities to develop their skills in these areas along with developing key strategies for team work. |
