Today in our Art lesson, we have started our Viking seascape unit. We have been trying out different techniques to create waves using sponge printing, wet/dry brushing and splatter painting. We really enjoyed our experimenting and we are looking forward to creating out final masterpieces.

A big hello and sunny welcome back to all the children in Year 5! It was lovely to see lots of happy, smiley faces greeting me on the playground this morning. The children have really impressed me with their work today, particularly during our Maths lesson and taking such an interest in our new topic 'Anglo-Saxons and Vikings'.
Some additional information that has also been shared with the children today: Our PE days are Monday (outdoor) and Friday (indoor). For outdoor PE children are expected to bring trainers to school and during the colder months ensure they have jogging bottoms and a jacket. Our Library day is Tuesday – we will visit the library to choose a book to read. The Year 5 children had an extra special treat today and were chosen to take part in an hours BMX lesson with the company 'Ramp it up'. They had the opportunity to test their skills on BMX bikes and scooters and then have a go at the various ramps and jumps. After a few laps, the children were oozing confidence! Have a look at some of the photos below! This week, the Year 5 children were lucky enough to visit the national space centre in Leicester. They spent the day exploring the various unique galleries, visiting the 360 degree planetarium and participating in a Sun, Moon and Earth interactive workshop. It was a fantastic day with lots of hands on experiences for the children which linked closely to our recent Space topic. This afternoon, the Year 5 children completed their design and technology unit by creating one final (and very popular!) bread product- pizza! The pupils had to make and prove their own dough, roll it out in to shape and then create their own pizzas by adding a selection of their favourite topics! It is safe to say the pizza was thoroughly enjoyed by all. To celebrate the coronation of King Charles, Year 5 got involved in a very British activity of baking their own scones! The pupils worked in groups to follow a recipe, weigh out their ingredients and work together before baking their scones in the oven. We enjoyed them afterwards with lots of jam and butter! As promised, here is some of our fantastic artwork created by the Year 5 children. Over the last 6 weeks, they have developed skills in sketching, learnt to pay close attention to detail and then finally used the technique of oil pastels to finish off their final piece for that pop of colour. Our new outdoor PE topic this half term is Hockey. Despite the cold weather this week, we managed to get outside and had a fantastic lesson practicing various dribbling techniques- including Indian dribbling. The children really impressed me with their control and accuracy when using a hockey stick and we played several mini games to practice these skills and techniques throughout the lesson. This half term, our art focus is called 1 animal, 4 views. The children will be using sketching pencils to draw an animal of their choice from 4 different perspectives. They will have to use tools such as crop and zoom in order to create different views, using shape, tone and line to really focus on detail. Over the next 6 weeks we will be building on various drawing techniques in order to create a finished masterpiece. I am so excited to see what these will look like as finished pieces as some of the drawings and detail created within the first lesson just absolutely blew me away! Due to the disturbance in our classroom (the naughty elves) we have been writing persuasive letters to Santa in order to try and convince him to send Zippity and Hoppity back to the North Pole. We have learnt about features of persuasive and formal letter writing and have implemented these in to our own letters. Lets hope Santa listens and helps us to find our nice elves which have apparently got lost in transition! |
