The Rainforest!

This half term we will be learning all about the Amazon Rainforest. Poppy has gone one step further and done some amazing home learning. She has created a model to show the layers of the rainforest and completed a video clip of her time at the Eden project. Take a look at photos of her work below.

For the next 5 weeks our learning on the Rainforest will involve us:

• Using a world map to locate the areas of rainforest and to describe the importance of rainforests to the ecosystems they support and humans.
• Finding out and describing the effects of human activity on the rainforests.
• Using aerial photographs of the River Amazon to find its features.
• Learning  about human activity near to the River Amazon, including the types of settlement, land use and how people earn money.
• Analysing the differences between rich and poor in South America and comparing their lifestyles to those in the UK.

We will also be reading the book The Explorer in our Guided Reading lessons which also links to our topic ‘The Rainforest’. The Explorer book is about four children who are on a plane which is on the way to Manaus, however the plane crashes in the Aamazon rainforest and the pilot is killed. The children find themselves completely alone, and a long long way from home. No adults to sort things out for them. If they don't make the effort, no one else will.
