Year 4, 5 and 6 had a fantastic time last night at our Halloween fun night. We played games, had 'dress the best mummy' competition, skeleton picture contests, lots of snacks, music and much more! It was fantastic seeing all the children in their best Halloween outfits - even the really scary ones!
A wet and windy day at Eden Camp! The storm was not going to ruin our fun today as we visited Eden Camp as part of our World War 2 topic. The children absolutely loved getting a first hand experience of what life was like during the war. Despite the wet, we had a fantastic day learning more about the war and exploring the many exhibitions of Eden Camp!
As part of our history work, we have been learning about World War 2 and this week the focus was on rationing and how this was used throughout the war times. We discussed the types of food which were rationed during this period which included many items we would consider as essential such as milk, butter and eggs. To give the children a first hand experience of how rationing was during the war, we made a war time chocolate cake which resembled how they would have to make them during this time. We had no access to butter, milk or eggs therefore the cake was a very different taste to what we are used to! Of course, we had to have a proper chocolate cake in order to compare to. It will come as no surprise to learn that the majority of our class preferred Charles the Caterpillar cake from Co-op as opposed to our war time cake! Have a look at the pictures below to see us baking and tasting!
Welcome back! We have officially been back at school 4 weeks now and Year 6 have been busy working hard and have already produced some incredible work! In English, we have produced our own short story based on an animation Chaperon Rouge (you can spot some of us writing it up below) as well as a background piece of descriptive writing based on 'The Piano'. The children certainly haven't lost their creative streak over the summer and have produced some amazing writing so far! In Maths, we have been focusing on place value and working with numbers up to 10 million. We have learnt to read, write, order and compare, round and problem solve in relation to the value of these numbers. We have just finished our first class novel 'Goodnight Mr Tom' which was a fantastic book about a boy called Willie Beech (an evacuee in the war). This book linked closely to our topic of WW2 which the children are really engaged with. We are all excited to continue learning about this over the next couple of weeks. In Art, our focus this half term is sketching. We have been practicing techniques such as cross hatching and using different types of sketching pencils to create tone and shadows. If you look closely at the pictures below, you can see us practicing our techniques by sketching animals! I cannot wait to share the final masterpieces with you in a couple of weeks as they link closely with our topic of WW2 and I just know they are going to be AMAZING!
