As part of a big push across school, Year 4 have been using practical resources to look at X by 10 and 100. We are trying to show that we do not just add 0s but instead, we move each digit 1 place to the left (for X by 10) and 2 places to the left (for X by 100). This may work sometimes at the start of Year 4 but, as we move through the rest of KS2, and we have to start multiplying by decimals, this will teach a misconception. We have shown that if we have a place with no digit there then we will include a place holder which is the 0. The children have really enjoyed using the counters and also being up out of their seats being physically moved when they have been X by 10 and 100.
