A high-quality Science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
At Kexborough Primary School we recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life and therefore, as one of the core subjects taught , we give the teaching and learning of Science the prominence it deserves. Through the teaching of Science we want to develop children who are curious about natural phenomena and who are excited by the process of understanding the world around them.
The Scientific area of learning is concerned with increasing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world, and with developing skills associated with Science as a process of enquiry. It will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence.
Throughout the primary phase ,our teaching in Science offers opportunities for children to:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics;
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of Science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them;
- be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.
We have built in specific vocabulary to each block of learning to allow children to build up an extended, specialist vocabulary which they can use and apply both in Science and across the wider curriculum.
Specific scientific skills are planned for each year to ensure that we develop children who are able to work in a variety of scientific ways and approaches to enable them to answer and respond to a range of scientific questions and enquiries. These skills are not taught as a separate aspect of the curriculum but are taught, developed and applied throughout all teaching and learning in Science throughout all year groups. Wherever possible, we involve the pupils in practical activities as these increase enthusiasm and motivation and provide first-hand experiences.
