Over the past two weeks, Year 5 have been working hard on writing explanation texts. We began by reading Danny the Champion of the World and exploring how Roald Dahl explained the clever plan for how to catch a pheasant. Using this as our model, we wrote our own explanation texts, learning how to use clear structure, technical vocabulary and conjunctions to explain ideas step by step.
For our independent writing, we were challenged to apply everything we had learned to a brand-new context – this time using fictional creatures. We each chose a magical creature – a Whispering Dragon, a Shadow Fox or a Golden Toad – and wrote a detailed explanation text about them. We were blown away by the creativity, imagination and brilliant explanations in everyone’s writing. From describing how a Whispering Dragon uses its powers, to explaining the secret habits of a Shadow Fox, the children combined factual explanation style with imaginative ideas perfectly. Take a look at some of our finished pieces below – we’re so proud of the fantastic work Year 5 have produced! This week, Year 5 have been busy becoming young scientists as they explored the Mohs Scale of Hardness – a special way of comparing how hard different materials are. The children learned that hardness can be tested by using a scratch test. If one material can scratch another, it means it is harder. If it cannot, then it is softer. By comparing which materials can scratch others, scientists can work out where they belong on the hardness scale. After learning about the theory, Year 5 carried out their own scratch tests in class. Working carefully, they tested a range of materials against each other to see which were harder and which were softer. They then recorded their observations in a table, just like real scientists would. This hands-on investigation helped them to understand how scientists use evidence to answer questions about the world around us. This half term in Art, we are learning all about portraits. We are looking at the amazing work of the artist Frida Kahlo to inspire us and by the end of the topic we will be creating our very own self-portraits.
Today we focused on one really important part of the face – the eyes! We thought carefully about the shape of the eye, where the pupil goes and how the eyelid changes the look of it. We also looked at how eyebrows and eyelashes can show expression and make each eye unique. We had a go at drawing eyes ourselves, trying out different shapes and details. These are just our first attempts, but we are excited to keep practising and can’t wait to see how our self-portraits turn out! Today in maths, we have been learning all about hundredths as part of a whole using lots of fun and practical activities.
We began by choosing one whole and cutting it into ten equal parts to represent tenths. Then, we carefully cut each tenth into ten equal parts to represent hundredths. After that, we recombined all the parts to make the whole again, which really helped us see how tenths and hundredths fit together. As a class, we explored real-life examples to help us understand:
📏💧🥣 Well done, Year 5, for being such fantastic mathematicians today! This half term, our focus text is Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl and Year 5 have been thoroughly enjoying every chapter so far! In our writing lessons, we’ve been exploring lots of descriptive writing. We began by imagining the character of the BFG, who features in the bedtime stories told by Danny’s father, and used adventurous vocabulary to bring him to life. More recently, we’ve turned our attention to describing Danny’s dad’s workshop. The children have worked hard to include ambitious adjectives, making sure to use commas between them and have tried hard to use different sentence openers to make their writing even more engaging! Take a look at some amazing examples below. We are incredibly proud of the wonderful pieces of writing produced so far. The children have shown great creativity and focus and it’s been fantastic to see their confidence grow. We can’t wait to discover Danny’s dad’s big secret in our reading lessons next week and start more writing about this! We are very excited to welcome everyone into Year 5 and can’t wait to get started with our learning this year.
PE Days Our PE lessons will take place every Monday and Friday. Please make sure children have trainers on both days, as well as suitable outdoor PE kit. This will give us the flexibility to switch between indoor and outdoor lessons depending on the weather. Homework Homework will be sent home every Wednesday and should be returned by the following Monday. Each week’s homework will link to the learning we are doing in class to help consolidate understanding. Our Learning This Term
