This term in Year 5, we’ve been diving into the fascinating history of the Anglo-Saxons. As part of our topic, we've explored why the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain, where they came from, and the reasons behind why the Romans' left Britain.
We started our lesson by ordering dates in history on a human timeline. We then started investigating why the Anglo-Saxons decided to settle in Britain. The children discovered that the Anglo-Saxons came from areas like modern-day Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. We explored the push and pull factors, learning about their search for better farmland and the decline of Roman rule. We also looked at why the Romans left Britain after such a long period of rule. The children learned that the Roman Empire was under attack from other invaders, so the soldiers had to return to Rome, leaving Britain vulnerable to new settlers. To bring our learning to life, the class worked in small groups to research these big questions. Each group gathered information, discussed their ideas, and then presented their findings to the rest of the class. It was wonderful to see such teamwork and enthusiasm, and the presentations were filled with interesting facts and creative ways to share what they had learned. The children have really enjoyed uncovering this period of British history, and we can’t wait to continue exploring more about the Anglo-Saxons in the coming weeks! In our maths lesson today, we have been using 0.1 place value counters to help us recognise that decimal numbers with tenths can be written as a multiplication!
We all worked hard together to understand a tricky concept! Well done Year 5! This half term in our outdoor PE lessons, we are focusing on developing football skills. This week, we practiced turning with the ball, dribbling, and using the 'drag back' technique. We really enjoyed today's lesson in the sunshine, and some of us even had the chance to play more football at the after-school club this evening.
Welcome to Year 5! We hope you’ve all had a fantastic summer and are feeling refreshed and ready for the exciting year ahead!
As we start the new academic year, please note our PE days: Outdoor PE will be on Mondays. As the weather gets cooler, please ensure you come prepared with jogging bottoms and a jacket to stay warm. Indoor PE will take place every Wednesday. Homework: Homework will be distributed every Wednesday and should be returned by the following Monday. Homework will support what we’re learning in class and will also revisit learning completed. We also ask that you also make time each day for reading and practicing times tables on Times Tables Rockstars to reinforce learning at home. If you have any questions or need support as we begin this new year, please don’t hesitate to see us. We are excited to make this a fantastic and successful year for everyone! Thank you, Mrs Powell and Miss Ramsden |
