Today, we looked at using different shades of pencil to create contrasts of colour within our Greek vases. We completed a skills lesson that developed the work that we started last week. These skills will culminate in us creating our own Greek vases in a few weeks which will be designed completely by us and will include our own characters and patterns that we have found from vases that we have studied from a range of historical sources. The children have been looking at recapping their work on subtraction from Year 3. We still had some misconceptions to address for example when you can complete 3 - 6 or 6 - 3 in a column method. We learnt about regrouping and exchanging when it was needed. We still had our highlighters out from Guided Reading so I asked a child to get 6 highlighters and then give me 3. I then asked a child to get 3 highlighters and give me 6. It was good to see that "light bulb moment" around the room. This will link nicely into our work when look at negative numbers and that is why we never say that we can't do 3 - 6. Friday 20th September is World Cleanup Day. To support this we have partnered with Barnsley Norse to join their volunteering initiative designed to improve local areas. We completed a litter pick in our local area supported by staff from school and a member of the Barnsley Norse team. This provided an excellent opportunity for the children to support the improvement of their community and local area and we are grateful to the Norse team for inviting us to participate in the project. We collected an amazing (and worrying) 14 bags of litter and the children commented that they could not believe how much litter they had found and picked up. There were a few members of our local community who even stopped us to say thank you for our hard work. The children in Year 4 need to proud of what they achieved and also Miss MacKay would like to thank them for their excellent conduct and behaviour whilst out in the community. This was the first time that Mr Grace had ever accompanied children on a 'school trip' and he has said that he had a brilliant time and would also like to thank the Year 4 children for inviting him to join them. Hello and welcome to our new Year 4 blog for the year! We will be filling this page with all of the fun learning activities that we complete as part of our curriculum. This first half term, we will be learning about Ancient Greece as part of our topic. In PE, we will be learning about football and multi-skills. In Science, we will be learning about States of Matter. In Computing, we will be learning about "The Internet". What is it? How do we keep safe? How does it work? We will also be completing a new subject called One Life which will look at our physical fitness, our mental fitness and our social fitness. This will include journaling on a morning and a weekly One Life session. Even though we do not see the children out onto the playground at the end of the day, the Year 4 door is always open so if anybody parents/ guardians need to talk, please feel free to come and see me.
