Year 2 Habitat Hunt Adventure!

​This week, Year 2 became real-life explorers as we went on a habitat hunt around our school grounds!
We focused on our woodland habitat area and carefully looked at what we could find. Before we started, we reminded ourselves what a habitat is — a place where plants and animals live.
What Did We Discover?
As fantastic scientists, we searched for three different types of things:

• Living things – things that are alive
• Dead things – things that were once alive
• Things that have never been alive

The children worked together brilliantly, looking closely under logs, near trees and in the grass.
We found:

• Living worms, ants and ladybirds
• Green plants, moss and grass
• Dead leaves and fallen twigs
• Stones, soil and pieces of bark that have never been alive

There was lots of excitement when we spotted mini beasts hiding in dark, damp places!

​Back to the Classroom
After our outdoor adventure, we returned to class to record our findings. The children:

• Drew detailed pictures of what they had found
• Carefully added labels
• Completed a table to explain whether the object was living, dead or never alive

We were so impressed with their scientific vocabulary and their careful observations. They are becoming brilliant young scientists!
It was a wonderful afternoon of exploring, questioning and learning in the fresh air.
