This week in Year 2, we have been busy exploring the exciting world of 3D shapes! The children began by learning the names and properties of a range of 3D shapes, including cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones, prisms, pyramids and spheres. They looked closely at each shape to identify its faces, vertices (corners) and edges, building their understanding through hands-on investigation. Working in small groups, the children were given different shapes to sort using specific criteria. For example, they grouped shapes based on the number of faces or whether they had vertices. This encouraged them to think carefully about the properties of each shape and explain their reasoning to others. As their confidence grew, the children took on the challenge of creating their own sorting criteria. This required them to apply what they had learned in a more independent and creative way. It was fantastic to see them discussing ideas, justifying their choices and sometimes even changing their minds after listening to their peers. We were particularly impressed with how well the children worked collaboratively. They shared ideas, listened respectfully, and supported one another to reach decisions together. These teamwork skills are just as important as the maths learning itself! Well done, Year 2, for your fantastic effort and enthusiasm this week! Comments are closed.
