September 25th, 2025

25/9/2025

This week the Bear Cubs and Big Bears have been learning more about healthy eating, particularly eating fruits and vegetables. They have been learning that fruits have seeds inside and vegetables don't. The Big Bears have also been learning that fruit grows on trees and plants and vegetables grow under or near the ground. We made pizzas using some healthy toppings like peppers, ham and olives. We used some of the fruit and vegetables to learn how to print pictures.
In Maths, the Bear Cubs have been learning to count 3 objects and to know that when one more is added or taken away there isn't 3 anymore. The Big Bears have been learning to compare two groups of objects by saying which has more and which has fewer.
Big Bears have also been learning how to mix powder paints this week; they've enjoyed making a variety of colours but it can be tricky making the paints just right; not too runny or too thick. We also wrote a letter from the lazy farmer (remember him!) to the duck apologising for not doing the work!

It's a healthy Autumn time!

22/9/2025

Last week, we went to look at the Oak tree and horse-chestnut tree to see if any treasures had dropped to the ground! We found lots of acorns but only a few conkers and shells. If you find any out and about please do bring them in so we can have a look at them.
The FS1 children were learning a song about autumn leaves:
Autumn leaves are falling down
Red, yellow, gold and brown
Autumn leaves are falling down
123.

Also last week, we were reading a new focus story 'Farmer Duck' - the farmer in the story is very lazy; he stays in bed all day eating chocolates and lets the duck do all the work!!! We started thinking how we could get the farmer healthy. We talked about healthy foods and the Bear Cubs tried some pepper and cucumber etc. They chose some healthy foods to stick onto a plate for the farmer whilst the Big Bears chose healthy foods then cut them out before sticking into the farmer's fridge.
In Maths, the FS1 children were learning how to build in construction by using the big, heavy blocks at the bottom and the smaller, lighter blocks at the top. In FS2, the children were learning to subitise - that means saying how many there are by just looking with their eyes.
In our One Life the Big Bears talked about what made them happy and drew a picture inside a heart.

Woodland Walk

16/9/2025

Last week we were still focusing on our story 'Owl Babies.' We all went to our school wood to see what a wood is. We noticed there were lots of trees and they weren't all the same. The FS2 children were learning the names of some of these trees; oak, horse-chestnut and pine trees. In the wood we felt the trunks - some trunks were rough and bumpy and hurt our hands! The FS1 children learnt that a tree has a trunk (but it's not like an elephant), branches and leaves. Everyone learnt how to paint a tree. In FS2, we thought more about the story and thought if mother owl would have left a letter for the owl babies maybe they wouldn't have been as worried so we thought of a letter together.
In food technology, some children made chocolate nests for the owl babies and we all enjoyed eating them!
In Maths, the FS1 children were learning to count to 3 and learning that 3 is 3 no matter what kind of objects are used. In FS2, children were learning to count one to one by lining objects up. We had a counting bunny that kept making mistakes!
At KPS we use the 'One Life' program to learn about ourselves and emotions in a positive way. This week, children were saying what is good about being them.

Our First Week

9/9/2025

We got off to a great start last week! Our focus story was Owl Babies so we were learning about owls and other things that can fly. Bear Cubs carefully painted inside an owl template and Big Bear painted free hand. Afterwards they all stuck some speckled, fluffy feathers on their paintings.
A big focus for last week was, and will be for the time being, using toys and resources appropriately in provision. All children were learning about taking turns and sharing which is a key part of their EYFS learning.
In the afternoon, Big Bears learnt phonics and handwriting - I was super impressed with their focus and writing skills.
In rhyme and poetry, Bear Cubs were reciting Humpty Dumpty and Big Bear were learning the poem 'A wise old owl.'
