This week we've been learning more about dinosaurs and in DT we have learnt how to make something move using a split pin. The children loved cutting the dinosaur's neck off then reattaching it using the split pin!
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of doubling and halving in practical games. In our story 'The Girl and the Dinosaur' a girl finds dinosaur bones on the beach. We have been digging for bones in the sand - but very carefully like archaeologists do! We've been creating pictures from sticks, pasta and pebbles and we have been learning to draw a dinosaur skeleton in detail. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of subtraction and playing games to help us understand. It's been lovely to see children playing the games independently and using the stem sentence eg. five take-away three equals two. In one game the children were trying to beat me to take-away 5 bears until they got to 0. It was very exciting to see who could throw a dice to see how many to take-away each time and in the end it was a draw!!!!! We have continued to read The Incredible Hotel this week and as part of that we have looking at different types of bridges (there's a bridge in the story). Children have been building bridges in different areas. In Drawing Club, we have drawn the hotel and main character from the story and we have also been making concoctions in the water - this is a new word we have learnt. We have also been making dens outside so we have shade from the hot sun.
This week we have shifted our focus story to 'The Incredible Hotel.' It's a story about a porter who works in a hotel, but he dreams of becoming a chef. We have been looking at photographs of different hotels to compare them - we've learnt they're not all the same. In provision we have been building hotels in the construction area and writing about kitchens. We did visit the school kitchen to see how it compares to our kitchens at home and everything is a LOT bigger; that's because there's a lot more children to feed! In Maths, we have been playing different games to reinforce our recall of numbers bonds to 5 and in phonics we are getting better at reading with our partner. |
