The children began by learning the names and properties of a range of 3D shapes, including cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones, prisms, pyramids and spheres. They looked closely at each shape to identify its faces, vertices (corners) and edges, building their understanding through hands-on investigation.
Working in small groups, the children were given different shapes to sort using specific criteria. For example, they grouped shapes based on the number of faces or whether they had vertices. This encouraged them to think carefully about the properties of each shape and explain their reasoning to others.
As their confidence grew, the children took on the challenge of creating their own sorting criteria. This required them to apply what they had learned in a more independent and creative way. It was fantastic to see them discussing ideas, justifying their choices and sometimes even changing their minds after listening to their peers.
We were particularly impressed with how well the children worked collaboratively. They shared ideas, listened respectfully, and supported one another to reach decisions together. These teamwork skills are just as important as the maths learning itself!

On Wednesday, Mrs Powell introduced NumBots in an assembly, and we couldn’t wait to get started. By Thursday afternoon, we were already having a go ourselves in class—and what a fantastic start we’ve made!
NumBots is a fun online game and app that helps us to improve our mental maths skills, especially addition, subtraction, and number bonds. We quickly discovered that it’s not only great for learning, but also really enjoyable to play. One of our favourite parts has been personalising our own robots and beginning our journey through the different metal levels.
Everyone has now been reminded of their login details, and there is a real buzz about continuing our NumBots adventures at home. We are determined to keep practising so we can become quicker and more confident mathematicians.
We are also very excited about earning certificates to celebrate our achievements—watch this space as we begin to level up!

The children have worked incredibly hard to turn their ideas into interactive quizzes. They carefully thought about the questions they wanted to ask, making sure they were fun, interesting, and sometimes even a little bit tricky! From choosing topics to designing colourful sprites and backgrounds, every detail was planned with creativity and enthusiasm.
Using Scratch Junior, the children learned how to give instructions to their characters, creating simple code to make their quizzes work. They explored how to make things happen when buttons are pressed, how to move characters, and even how to give feedback when a question is answered correctly or incorrectly.

What has been most impressive is how the children showed perseverance and problem-solving skills. When something didn’t work the first time, they didn’t give up—they debugged their programs, tried new ideas, and helped each other along the way.
The finished quizzes are fantastic! They are fun to play, full of imagination, and show just how much the children have learned about computing. We are so proud of their hard work and creativity.

The children’s World Book Day outfits were absolutely fabulous. We had a wonderful mix of book characters, pyjamas for bedtime reading, and lots of creative homemade costumes. The effort that went into them was amazing — thank you for your continued support!

​Our inspiration was the brilliant book Superworm by Julia Donaldson. We began the day by listening carefully to the story and enjoying the exciting adventures of the ever-helpful Superworm. The children loved joining in with the repeated phrases and spotting all the different minibeasts in the story.
Designing Superhero Minibeasts
After reading the story, the children became authors and illustrators themselves! First, they designed their very own superhero minibeast characters. We had an amazing range of imaginative creations including super-speedy ladybirds, beautiful butterflies, slimy slugs and super tough snails! The creativity was incredible.
​Becoming Authors
Next, we broke the story down into clear sections to understand how it was structured. Using this as inspiration, the children planned and wrote their own books starring their superhero minibeasts. They thought carefully about:
  • Who the villain in their story was
  • What happened to their hero
  • How their story would end
We were so impressed with the children’s writing. They used exciting adjectives, powerful verbs and brilliant ideas to bring their characters to life. Each book was completely unique!
​Reading with friends
Later in the afternoon, the Year 6 children came to the Year 2 classroom to read stories that they had written to the Year 2 children. It was lovely to hear them using expression and bringing their stories alive. Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed listening to them.
A Perfect Ending
To finish our special day, we relaxed and enjoyed watching the Magic Light animation of Superworm, produced by Magic Light Pictures. It was wonderful to compare the film with the book and spot the similarities and differences.
We truly had a lovely day celebrating reading, creativity and imagination. Well done, Year 2 — you were all superheroes today!

]]><![CDATA[Year 2 Habitat Hunt Adventure!]]>Mon, 02 Mar 2026 12:07:45 GMThttps://www.kexboroughprimary.com/year-2-blog/year-2-habitat-hunt-adventure​This week, Year 2 became real-life explorers as we went on a habitat hunt around our school grounds!
We focused on our woodland habitat area and carefully looked at what we could find. Before we started, we reminded ourselves what a habitat is — a place where plants and animals live.
What Did We Discover?
As fantastic scientists, we searched for three different types of things:
  • Living things – things that are alive
  • Dead things – things that were once alive
  • Things that have never been alive
The children worked together brilliantly, looking closely under logs, near trees and in the grass.
We found:
  • Living worms, ants and ladybirds
  • Green plants, moss and grass
  • Dead leaves and fallen twigs
  • Stones, soil and pieces of bark that have never been alive
There was lots of excitement when we spotted mini beasts hiding in dark, damp places!
​Back to the Classroom
After our outdoor adventure, we returned to class to record our findings. The children:
  • Drew detailed pictures of what they had found
  • Carefully added labels
  • Completed a table to explain whether the object was living, dead or never alive
We were so impressed with their scientific vocabulary and their careful observations. They are becoming brilliant young scientists!
It was a wonderful afternoon of exploring, questioning and learning in the fresh air.

]]><![CDATA[Year 2 Go Totally Tropical!]]>Tue, 10 Feb 2026 16:01:53 GMThttps://www.kexboroughprimary.com/year-2-blog/year-2-go-totally-tropical​Year 2 had a fantastic day out at Tropical World in Leeds, where we learned all about different habitats and the amazing creatures that live in them.
In the morning, the children took part in an exciting workshop. They became habitat detectives and learned how scientists can work out which animals live in certain environments — by using animal poo for clues!  The children were fascinated to discover how an animal’s diet and droppings can tell us so much about where it lives. They also learned about how animals adapt to their environments to help them survive, and discussed how we can all make good choices to look after our environment.
​After lunch, we explored Tropical World and saw a huge variety of animals from around the world. The children were full of excitement as they spotted reptiles, birds, insects and mammals in their different habitats. The meerkats were a firm favourite — the children loved watching them scurry around and agreed they were very cute!
All of the children behaved beautifully throughout the day and were a real pleasure to take. They listened carefully, showed curiosity, and represented the school wonderfully.

]]><![CDATA[Dazzling Dancers!]]>Mon, 09 Feb 2026 15:43:53 GMThttps://www.kexboroughprimary.com/year-2-blog/dazzling-dancersThis week, our Year 2 children have been busy bringing the story of The Three Little Pigs to life through dance — and we couldn’t be prouder of them!
Working in groups, the children collaborated to create a whole-class dance inspired by the key moments of the story. They shared ideas, listened to one another, and supported their teammates throughout the process. It was wonderful to see such positive teamwork and cooperation in action.
The children worked especially hard to synchronise their movements with the music, practising carefully to make sure their timing and actions matched. This took real concentration, resilience, and plenty of determination — and they rose to the challenge brilliantly.
The finished dance is truly amazing. The children performed with enthusiasm, confidence, and creativity, and their enjoyment really shines through. We hope you enjoy watching the video as much as we enjoyed seeing the children learn, rehearse, and perform.

]]><![CDATA[Perfect Printing!]]>Mon, 02 Feb 2026 12:12:29 GMThttps://www.kexboroughprimary.com/year-2-blog/perfect-printing7113989​Year 2 have been busy artists this half-term, exploring printing through a colourful and creative unit inspired by the work of designer Orla Kiely. The children loved discovering her bold use of shape, colour and repeating patterns, and it sparked lots of excitement and ideas in the classroom.
​The children began by looking closely at examples of Orla Kiely’s designs, noticing how simple shapes can be repeated to create striking patterns. They experimented with pattern layouts, thinking carefully about spacing, repetition and colour choices. We talked about how artists plan their work and how patterns can tell a visual story.
​Next came the hands-on part! Each child designed and made their own printing block using sponge, carefully cutting and shaping it to match their chosen design. This required great focus and fine motor skills, as well as problem-solving when shapes didn’t quite work the first time. The children showed fantastic perseverance and creativity throughout this stage.
​Once their blocks were ready, the children explored printing with paint, experimenting with pressure, colour combinations and repeated prints. They quickly discovered that printing doesn’t always come out “perfect” — and that sometimes the most interesting results come from happy accidents! The final pieces show a wonderful range of repeating patterns, from bold and bright to subtle and carefully balanced.
We are so proud of the thought, effort and enthusiasm Year 2 have put into this unit. Their finished prints are full of personality and reflect their growing confidence as artists. Please enjoy the photos below, which capture both the creative process and the fantastic final outcomes.

We have been thinking carefully about the different food groups our bodies need to stay strong, energetic and ready to learn.
The children explored what makes a balanced meal and why it is important to include a mix of fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates, protein and dairy. We talked about how different foods help our bodies in different ways, from giving us energy to helping us grow.
After learning about balanced diets, the children planned and drew their own balanced meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They carefully chose foods for each meal and explained why they were a healthy choice. Their drawings show a fantastic understanding of how to balance different food groups across the day.
We were so impressed with how well thought out and neatly presented their work is. The children took great pride in their drawings and were excited to share their ideas with their classmates.
